Preparation

  • Print and cut out the visual aids. The visuals come from the March 2012 Friend “Getting to Know Our Church Leaders”.
  • Using a utility knife, cut along the dotted line on each chair. Using 15 different colored markers or 15 different colored pieces of paper, put a different color on the back of the bottom tab on each photo. Put a square of matching color on the back of each matching chair just above the slit.
  • Tape each chair to a piece of 30″x20″ foam board using double-sided removable tape or sticky tac. Sticky tac the pictures of the apostles and prophet to a separate heavy sheet of paper.

 

Music Time Game Idea 

The object of the game is to match the prophet and apostle’s pictures to their correct chairs.  Have a volunteer pick a picture. Have them slide the tab of the picture into a chair slit. The child can they check the back to see if it is correct by looking to see if the colors on the tab and chair match. If they get a match they can choose a song to sing, or you may have specific songs you want them to sing written on the back of each chair, or a list of songs written on the board they can choose from.

Article of Faith Song Review

Our Primary children have been learning the Articles of Faith this year by singing one a month as the opening song. I do a review activity every six months. For the December review I attached balloons to the Article of Faith numbers. I attached the numbered balloons to the left side of the board with magnets on the back of them.  I had pictures with key words for those Articles of Faith on the right side of the board. It was a matching activity. I used a sticky fingers and had a child flip it at the balloons (sticky fingers stick really well to balloons). For whichever number it stuck to they had to find the matching key word and picture. The song could be played as a reminder, or they could choose a card in the pockets behind the numbers. Each card contained a part of that Article of Faith written on it. They could read the card to help remind them of which Article of Faith it was. Once they guessed correctly I looked for a child who could quote the Article of Faith. That child got the next turn with the sticky fingers. But first we sang that Article of Faith song before making another match.

The balloons could be attached to the numbers by punching a hole in the bottom of the number and then pushing the tied end of the balloon through the hole from the back to the front.


Fourth of July Song Choosing Activity

Fourth of July Song Choosing Activity

Activity Description: The stars on the flag have song titles on them, and the stripes of the flag have lines from the song on them. A child choose a song title and then a line from that song. The child has to draw a representation of that song line on the board while the children sing the song. The children then guess what line it is.

This activity could be used to sing patriotic songs for the Fourth of July week, or it could be used to review songs.

Preparation

  • Items needed: red, white, and blue ribbon or paper, about 100 straight pins, a 12×18 foam board (3/4 inch thick), masking tape, a container for the pins, and chalk and eraser. (A piece of cardboard, and tape instead of pins, could be used instead of the foam board.)
  • Cut the ribbon or paper  into strips (I used 1 1/2 inch ribbon for my stripes and 7/8 inch ribbon for my star area. Each piece of 1 1/2 inch ribbon was approx. 5 inches long, and the 7/8 inch ribbon pieces were approx. 4 1/2 inches long.)  I had 42 red pieces, 38 white pieces, 23 small blue pieces, and 7 small white pieces. I had to cut a little off the sides of the foam board when I was done to make it all fit.
  • Write the song titles on the back of the small white strips of ribbon, and include the flag stripe row number where the lines for that song will be. Write the song lines on the back of the wide white or red ribbons according to which row they will be on. (I attached pieces of masking tape to the back middle of the ribbons so I could write on them. If you use paper strips you should be able to write directly on the strip.)
  • Make each strip into a loop, and attach each loop onto its place on the foam board with a pin (or attach onto a piece of cardboard using tape).
  • Optional: Attach a ribbon border around the outside edge of the foam board using pins or hot glue.

 

Presentation

Choose two children to come to the front. Have each of them choose a white star loop off the flag. Each of their song titles will direct them to a stripe in the flag. Have them choose one of the loops on that stripe. (Have them put the pin into a container.) Have the child who thinks he/she can draw a representation of their song line, tell their song title to the primary. Have the other child sit down and think about how to draw the line they have chosen.

Explain to the primary children that they will sing the song while the child draws a picture on the board. After they are done singing they can try and guess which line it is. The child who guesses correctly gets to come up and choose either a new star song title, or another stripe from the song they just sang if it needs reviewed again. Have that child go sit down and think about how to draw the line. Have the child who has been thinking about his/her line come up and tell what song title they have, and then have the child draw the line while the children sing. Continue on in this manner until all the song titles have been sung or reviewed.

Junior Primary children may need the help of a teacher to discuss ideas on what to draw, and they may also need help drawing. Also let the senior Primary know that they can get the help of a teacher or member of the Primary presidency if needed.

 

 


Spring Showers – Song Choosing Review

Spring Showers Plinko Board – Song Choosing Review

This week I am reviewing the songs we have learned so far this year. I wanted to use a spring shower theme, so I came up with a Plinko board. A child slides a rain drop (a flat floral marble) down from the top back of the Plinko board trying to get it in the slot of the song they want to sing. Whatever slot it lands in is the song the children will sing. They must try and get it into a slot of a song that hasn’t already been sung. Each child will have one try to do this.

Preparation

  • Items needed: a 20×30 inch foam board from Walmart, blue flat floral marbles, a sheet of clear plastic such as from dollar store gift basket bags (or a couple sheets of saran wrap), clear packaging tape, a small flat sponge, double-sided tape, toothpicks, and a utility razor knife.
  • To make the box, cut the foam board in half, and with the utility knife, score a two inch line down each side and across the bottom of the half sheet of foam board.  Bend the scored areas backwards so that it forms a box (the square corner pieces will have to be cut out).  Tape the corners together.
  • Print the Spring Shower Pictures.  Cut out the flowers and glue them to the bottom of the box. Print and cut out the titles of the songs you wish to review, and glue one above each flower. Cut the sponge into strips to make dividers between the flowers. Attach each sponge divider with double-sided tape. Using double-sided tape, attach some blue floral marbles to the back of the box to look like raindrops coming down on the flowers. Cover the box with clear plastic; pull the plastic tight and tape it to the outside edges or back of the box with clear packaging tape. Cut out and tape the grass to the bottom edge of the box. Cut out the clouds and attach them to the top edge of the plastic with double-sided tape. Look down the top of the Plinko box and see where there are open areas to the slots. Stick the toothpicks through the plastic and into the foam board wherever there is a clear opening. This will make it more difficult to get the marbles into the slot of choice.

Song Review for “Follow the Prophet”

Bugs and Slime Song Choosing Activity

Primary Music: This week in junior primary we reviewed all the verses we had learned for “Follow the Prophet”.

I started off by talking about how the prophet asked us to plant gardens. I told the children that I try to be obedient and follow the prophet, but this year my garden has been plagued with bugs, and I don’t like bugs. But I try to endure, because I know that the prophet knows what is best for us. (There are many reasons gardens are important, some  include: garden produce is healthy, gardening is an economical way to obtain fruits and vegetables, and gardening knowledge is important for preparedness.)

Then I told the children that I had a choosing activity using bugs for the song “Follow the Prophet”. The bugs would help remind them that they should follow the prophet even when it is hard, because he knows what is best for us. Then I told them that some bugs secrete a slime substance. I showed them the container of slime. I told them that they had to reach into the slime to find the bugs. The bugs each had a verse title attached to its leg.

I looked for children who were singing and being reverent to be the bug retrieving helpers. They sang their hearts out. I had no idea junior Primary knew the verses so well. They all sang so well, I had to get help from the teachers in deciding who I should choose as a helper.

I made sure the child retrieving the bug from the container of slime didn’t block the view of the other children. The children enjoyed watching when the slime attached to the person’s hand and stretched and glopped. After getting the bug out, I had the child read the tag and tell what verse it was, and then I gave them a wet wipe to wash off their hands. I had attached the song titles to the plastic bugs by folding over a clear piece of tape onto one leg of each bug. The tape sealed onto the leg. Then I wrote the verse name on the tape with a sharpie.

Slime Directions: To make the slime, mix 3 teaspoons of Metamucil with 3 cups of water in a microwaveable bowl. Add some drops of green and yellow food coloring to the mix until it is the desired color. Microwave the mixture on high for about 4 minutes. Stir the mixture, then microwave again for about three minutes. Continue these two steps until the mixture is the thickness and texture you desire.  Be very careful, the mixture will be very hot. After it cools down, pour the goo into a tall, clear plastic container, or into a glass jar with a wide mouth. The clear container will allow the children to see the goo and bugs. Do not fill the container to the top. Make sure that when someone reaches into the goo, it doesn’t overflow. Put a paper plate under the container during the activity to catch any drips.

Easter Egg Punch Board Activity

In Primary I taught the hymn “He is Risen” during the month of August. I told the children that the song “He is Risen” celebrates Jesus’ resurrection, and we usually sing it in April. I asked what holiday we observe in April in celebration of Jesus’ resurrection. (Easter)

I asked the children if they knew why we use eggs in our Easter celebration of Jesus’ resurrection.  (For many people, the living bird coming out of the egg was a reminder of the living Christ coming out of the tomb on the third day.)

I told the children I was going to use Easter eggs to help them learn the song, and I showed them the Easter egg punch board. Inside the eggs were words to the song. I told them they were going to play a matching game. I had pictures to the song on the board, and the children matched the words that were in the eggs with the pictures on the board. Some of the eggs contained a foam hand, and the children who found those got to be my helping hand and fix any matches that were wrong at the end of the activity.

To break open an egg, a child had to peck at it with their finger, like a baby bird would peck to break the shell of an egg.

I had the children who found the foam hands sit in seats at the front. When all the words had been placed under pictures, I had the helping hand children take turns fixing the word strips. I held up numbers telling them how many were wrong before each of their turns. When they got all the words in the right place, we sang the song.  After that we talked about the words to the song.

I pointed out that the words “He is risen” is repeated two times with joyful emphasis. When we got to the part that says “He has burst his three day prison”, I asked what prison it was talking about? (Death)  On the part where it says “Let the whole wide world rejoice” I asked, “Why does the whole world rejoice about Jesus’ resurrection? (Because of Jesus’ resurrection we will also be resurrected and live again.)  Christ won the victory over death.  We honor Jesus, and show how grateful we are to him for what he has done for us, by singing this song with joy in our hearts.

The second week I hid Easter eggs around the room. In each Easter egg was a line from the song. I had a child look for an Easter egg while everyone sang the song. We took the words off the board that was in the Easter egg the child found. Then we sang the song again while another child looked for an egg.  This helped them memorize the song with fun repetition.

Punch board assembly instructions:

  • Items needed: one foam board 20″x30.5″, a knife, white lunch bags, a multi-color pack of gift tissue paper, double -sided permanent tape, four objects such as stickers or cut outs, and the He is Risen word strips and pictures.

I cut out  twelve 3 3/4 inch round holes on the foam board with a knife. The holes were about 3 1/8 inches apart side to side, and 2 1/8 inches apart top to bottom.

I cut about 2 1/2 inches off the top of each lunch bag.  I cut a slit 1 1/2 inches deep on each of the top four corners of the bags. I folded back the four edges. I put an open bag over a hole on the foam board and taped the folded back edges to the foam board.  Note: I used lunch bags because they could be folded up for easy storage of the punch board.

I cut out and rolled up each of the word strips. I put a paper clip on each one to hold it in place. I put each word strip into one of the paper bag openings on the board. I put a foam hand (any kind of item could be used for this)  in the remaining four holes.

I cut out 12 egg shapes from the tissue paper. The eggs were each 4 1/2 inches wide and 5 3/4 inches tall. I placed pieces of double sided tape around the outsides edges of the holes and placed a tissue egg over each hole.

I cut out 12 more eggs shapes from the tissue to replace everything for Junior Primary. The best way to use this activity with Junior Primary is to only use half the eggs at a time. Put the first part of the song in half the eggs, and the second part of the song in the other half of the eggs. It is easier for Junior Primary to learn the song when they only have to focus on half of it at a time.
